James Tavernier has been “excellent” for Rangers but the time has come for a change at Ibrox, says Derek Ferguson.

The Light Blues captain has been linked to transfers that would see him link up with former managers in either Al-Ettifaq’s Steven Gerrard [Daily Record, 24 April] or Besiktas’ Giovanni van Bronckhorst this summer [Bulent Uslu, 9 June], with one report already claiming he has chosen the former [The Gallant Few, 19 June].

Although Ferguson accepts the 32-year-old is settled in Glasgow after nearly a decade at the club he is concerned that his legs might be starting to go, so now is the time for him to cash in on a Saudi move before the end of his career and let Rangers move on with their overhaul under Philippe Clement.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I know he’s pretty settled in Glasgow. I think his son plays in one of the youth teams at Rangers. He’s quite happy in Glasgow.

“But you touch on the Saudi thing. Money sets you up, his family, relatives and everything, we don’t know that situation.

“It’s just down to the individual. My opinion, and it’s just my opinion, I think it’s time for a change.

“He’s been excellent, he’s been brilliant for us. I’ve got nothing but praise for the guy.

“But there just comes a time when sometimes the legs seem to go a little bit, so he’s got to box clever.”

Rangers have Dujon Sterling ready to take over at right-back

Rangers
James Tavernier has scored 125 goals for Rangers and will be hard to replace going forward.

Dujon Sterling is said to be the man set to take over the right-back spot after so long where Tavernier has been virtually ever-present [Rangers Review, 17 June].

The captain and fellow Gerrard target Connor Goldson are arguably now the main links to the past few years left at Ibrox following the exits of Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and Borna Barisic on free transfers.

And while his contribution to the club can’t be disputed a decent offer could well be accepted if the manager wanted to put the money into more of his own targets.

In other Rangers news, John Bennett has made clear that the club are ready to dig deep to splash the cash this summer.
