'Mortal Blow For Rangers' - Keith Wyness issues 'dark prediction' for 2025

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed it would be a “mortal blow” for Rangers if they failed to qualify for a top European competition next season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Aberdeen’s rise could signal trouble for the Gers.

Aberdeen and Celtic sit joint-top of the Scottish Premiership and will get Champions League qualifying berths in the 2025-26 season if they stay in their positions.

Meanwhile, a third-place finish would only see Rangers qualify for the second round of Europa League qualifying – unless a top-two side or the Gers win the Scottish Cup, which would see them qualify for the play-off round.

The Ibrox club are already slipping behind Celtic in revenue terms with their Old Firm rivals currently playing in the new money-spinning Champions League format this season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Missing out on Europe would be big.

“Rangers count on it. The debts they have now will be contingent on that qualification.

“I would think, without looking at the balance sheet, that they had borrowed ahead and relied on that qualification.

“It would be a mortal blow for Rangers to finish third, especially with Celtic being so financially stable.

“It would be a major blow if Aberdeen could come through and take that spot.

“It’s still early in the season and early to make these dark predictions, but there are issues building up for Rangers every week.”
