Keith Wyness: Man City fight 'could break up the league' as new meeting held

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Man City have caused “real division” between Premier League clubs after their assault on associated party transaction (APT) rules.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the “anger” could “break up one of the best leagues in the world”.

Premier League clubs met last week (22 October) to discuss the path forward for APT rules, with a vote not yet expected to take place.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider on Sunday (27 October) that Man City’s associated dispute with the league could now drag on until next year.

A tribunal earlier this year found some aspects of the regulations to be unlawful after City sued for damages – but both sides have claimed a victory in the well-publicised case.

Wyness told Football Insider last week (23 October) that City have “inflamed tensions” between Premier League clubs after general counsel Simon Cliff sent a strongly-worded email following the ruling.

Wyness hopes new meeting will lead to Man City truce

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Man City have inflamed tensions even further.

“The clubs have been pretty angry about that, and we’re starting to see some real division between the clubs.

“I’m hoping all this anger is going to lead to a settlement and peace breaking out.

“When people get this angry, they sometimes realise in self-interest that peace is needed.

“Otherwise, you’re going to break up one of the best leagues in the world.

“We’re coming towards that stage now and I’d be very interested to see what last week’s meeting threw up.

“It’s going to be a big indication of where the politics is going to go in the coming weeks.”
