'Must admit...' - Journalist amazed by deal Rangers are trying to conclude for 'Leader'

South American football journalist Nathan Joyes has branded the possibility of Rangers signing Damian Garcia as one to be “very impressed” by.

In a post on X [11 June], Joyes talked up what would appear to be a transfer coup for Philippe Clement, who is looking to reassemble his squad throughout the summer window.

Midfielder Garcia is currently with hometown club Penarol in Uruguay, as the Gers look to complete a deal to bring him to Scotland [Football Scotland].

Joyes said of the potential deal: “Must admit, I’m very impressed if Rangers manage to get this one over the line.

“A leader with a strong mentality yet also great on the ball. The ideal no.6.”

By the account of Joyes and others who cover the South American game, Garcia could be an excellent addition to Clement’s squad – particularly for the future.

But it’s likely the young Uruguayan would be in the thick of the action from the off, with Rangers having lost numerous central midfielders.

Jefte and Clinton Nsiala have already been captured at Ibrox to strengthen the defence, whilst Mohamed Diomande’s obligation to buy clause has been activated.

Garcia could be the next signing for Clement, who is under added pressure to make the most of his transfer autonomy and build a squad strong enough to go the distance with Celtic in 2024-25.

The 20-year-old has been a regular at youth level for his nation having played in several successful tournaments, and could now elevate his career with an opportunity in European football.
