'My sense is' - Journalist makes prediction over Everton takeover contenders

Everton have reportedly attracted interest from six parties keen to complete a takeover of the club, with two seemingly ahead of the pack in the view of journalist Paul Brown.

777 Partners’ exclusivity agreement ended before the Miami-based firm were able to purchase the Toffees, leaving the door open for new investors.

However, Brown feels there are only two “serious contenders”, both of whom would represent an upgrade on 777.

He posted on X (9 June): “Smoke & mirrors to much of recent EFC takeover talk. Interest in club is different from a firm bid being made.

“It’s hard to be sure but my sense is that there are still only two serious contenders. Both of which would be good news compared to previous bidder!”

Are Everton better off without 777 Partners?

The protracted 777 takeover saga – which began in September last year when the Miami-based firm agreed a deal with Farhad Moshiri – saw fan sentiment turn from hope to frustration and eventually fear that a deal would be done.

777’s continued failure to produce the funds required to pass the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test, as well as a number of other allegations and reports of financial issues, painted a worrying picture of the suitability – or lack thereof – of Everton’s prospective new owners.

Following the end of that ill-advised exclusivity agreement, two frontrunners have emerged from the pack – Roma owner Dan Friedkin and a party spearheaded by Everton fans Andy Bell and George Downing which is backed by Michael Dell.

If it is to be either of these two interested parties who eventually takes over at Everton, it is hard to envisage that they could possibly be worse owners than 777 would have been.

Both have their merits and appear to be – on the surface, at least – strong candidates who would prove reliable custodians of the club.

In other Everton news, Manchester United have drawn up a list of seven alternatives to Jarrad Branthwaite.
