Rangers defender Robin Propper has left Billy Dodds baffled with a piece of defending in the clash with Kilmarnock.
Philippe Clement’s side returned from the international break in disappointing fashion as they were beaten 1-0 at Rugby Park on Sunday (20 October) with Markley Watkins’ late goal the difference.
Although Watkins did eventually break the deadlock, he had a great chance to get on the scoresheet early on after Propper let Kyle Vassell drift past him, much to the frustration of BBC pundit Dodds.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Sunday (20 October, 12:07) he said: “We’ll touch on it a minute but we’ve got to take the throw-in but my word what is he [Propper] doing on this blustery day?
“Going back to the chance, blustery day, you know how the wind sweeps through that corner so to let it bounce and then once Vassell gets the contact and it falls to Watkins, I think he should be scoring.
“He’s either got to blast it or make sure he gets it over Souttar.”
How much did Rangers pay for Robin Propper transfer at Ibrox?
While the conditions were by no means easy to deal with at Rugby Park on Sunday, Propper made defending look incredibly difficult as he failed to deal with the home side’s attack.
The Dutchman let the ball run far too often and never looked comfortable with the ball at his feet on the artificial pitch.
Fans will have some sympathy because this will have been a different challenge from anything else the defender has faced in his career so far, but an experienced defender shouldn’t make it look this difficult.
Of course, Jack Butland did also find himself in no man’s land so the blame cannot lie with Propper alone, but it was his initial complacency that created the chance.
Fortunately, a combination of Butland and John Souttar ensured that the early mistake went unpunished and while it didn’t ultimately end up coming back to bite Clement’s side in the end, it did set the tone for what happened in the remainder of the match.
