'Terrible' - BBC Sportsound pundit slams one Rangers player in 1-0 loss v Killie

Billy Dodds blasted Cyriel Dessers’ “terrible” movement as Rangers lost 1-0 away at Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Marley Watkins scored an 87th-minute winner for the hosts at Rugby Park to deny Philippe Clement’s men to make up some ground on Celtic and Aberdeen in the top two after they drew with each other on Saturday.

Dessers, 29, hit the crossbar in the second half but had a largely quiet game in front of goal, leading to criticism from ex-Inverness manager Dodds for his failure to get involved in play.

“They [Rangers] haven’t had an influence on the game and they’re doing all the wrong things, they’ve got the extra man in midfield and they don’t use it quickly enough,” Dodds said live on BBC Sportsound (20 October, 12:54pm).

“Their wide players come on the inside but never take anybody on the outside and never get crosses in the box.

“Dessers is playing on very little quality up front but when it has come to him his movement has been terrible throughout the match. He looks a yard short, not sharp and wouldn’t come to the ball.”

Cyriel Dessers needs to step his game up for Rangers

Dessers may well be the Gers’ top scorer this season but Friday’s game against Kilmarnock marks five Scottish Premiership appearances without a goal.

He may know how to get the ball into the back of the net on occasions but it’s something that doesn’t happen often enough.

There have been several times this season where the number nine has been on the receiving end of criticism for his final third play with Keith Jackson even saying his all-round playstyle is a “huge problem” for Rangers as he often doesn’t hold up play when needed.

At the moment, Hamza Igamane is Philippe Clement’s only other option for the number nine role due to the numerous injuries Danilo seems to be burdened with.

But, as the Morrocco international hasn’t yet got fully accustomed to Scottish football after his summer move, a massive weight lies upon the shoulders of Dessers as the club’s main striker option.

If the Gers are serious about mounting a title challenge this season, things need to improve drastically in the final third.

The season is still young and there’s plenty of time for things to turn around but, at the moment, Dessers needs to find his goal-scoring form soon otherwise he may have to be axed from the starting XI and leave the Gers in a bit of a pickle.

In other Rangers news, the Gers have been told not to “go back” in for Ryan Kent by Mark Guidi.
