Neil Warnock believes Everton need to part ways with Dominic Calvert-Lewin amid links with a Goodison Park exit.
The Toffees are “desperate” to keep the 27-year-old forward and are working on a new deal, according to TEAMtalk, but Newcastle United could return to the table for a deal after seeing a bid rejected earlier this summer [Liverpool Echo].
While Calvert-Lewin hit a purple patch towards the end of the 2023/24 season, likely keeping Sean Dyche’s side in the Premier League, he only notched seven league goals in total.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Thursday (8 August, 8:54am), Warnock said: “As the manager? Let him go. They can’t be too greedy on the fee. I know they’ll try to make as much as they can but he’s served his time. He needs to start again somewhere else.
“He’s a good player but he’s not been able to show it. If you’re not happy as a player, it doesn’t come out on the pitch. I think he’s desperate for a new shirt now.”
Everton to part ways with Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
If a team such as Newcastle were to attempt again to sign the attacker, it may be too good of an opportunity to pass up this summer.
The Toffees risk losing him as a free agent next summer, rather than secure a significant fee for the 27-year-old, which could be detrimental to the club’s finances.
Calvert-Lewin has notched 68 goals in 247 appearances since arriving at Goodison Park in 2016, which by no means is prolific, but it seems weird to think of an Everton squad without him available.
Without the player’s consistent injuries, there is no telling what kind of numbers the striker could have produced on Merseyside, but given the amount of money that the Magpies are potentially willing to pay, those funds could be well spent elsewhere.
With the transfer deadline day fast approaching, however, the club need to work out exactly what the plan is for Calvert-Lewin, and whether they need to find a replacement before August 30.
