Newcastle United have been backed to sell Sean Longstaff before the transfer window shuts.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham star Frank McAvennie believes the midfielder is “not the quality” of the players he replaces from the bench.
Football Insider reported that Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for the 26-year-old midfielder.
The Magpies want £20million for Longstaff, who is entering the final year of his contract at St James’ Park.
Longstaff played a key role in the squad last season, scoring eight goals across 46 appearances in all competitions.
Newcastle could replace Sean Longstaff with more quality
Selling Longstaff would be a pure profit move for the Magpies in terms of PSR because he is a homegrown player.
That would open more opportunities for the Premier League side to replace him and bolster the squad.
“To get Longstaff out and get [out] people like that and the fringe players,” McAvennie told Football Insider.
“I know he’s homegrown and all that kind of stuff, but when you’re bringing players on, they’re not the quality of what’s going off.
“They’re not even near it there’s a huge gap.
“That’s where the problem has been with Newcastle’ they’ve not got the players to come on.
“Longstaff will go somewhere and probably be number one because he’s a good player, but not for Newcastle.”
In other news, Newcastle braced for Kieran Trippier offers.
