Newcastle doing everything to stop Anthony Gordon joining Liverpool - pundit

Anthony Gordon “wouldn’t think twice” about quitting Newcastle United to sign for Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Scotland international Alan Hutton believes Newcastle will be desperate to keep ahold of Gordon, 23, but “is not sure” if the England international will remain at the club beyond the transfer window.

The Telegraph claim Liverpool indicated during discussions they would accept £45m for Gomez, 27, meaning Gordon could effectively have moved to Anfield for £30m plus Gomez, meeting Newcastle’s £75m valuation.

Football Insider revealed (August 3) that Gordon may even go on strike to force through a move to Liverpool.

A deal fell apart a month ago as the Tyneside club were able to navigate their PSR struggles through the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton respectively.

Ex-Everton winger Gordon managed to score 12 goals and provide 11 assists in 48 appearances for Newcastle last season.

His impressive form earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 but he only played a single minute at the tournament.

“It’s one of those ones I’m not sure about”, Hutton told Football Insider.

“I feel like, I don’t know him, but I feel like if something was to come up that he fancied, he’d be willing to do it and he probably wouldn’t really think twice.

“I think, coming from Everton, going there (Newcastle) and now potentially going back to Liverpool, I don’t think that’s something that would phase him.

“It might for other players but I genuinely don’t think he’d be bothered.

“Newcastle will be desperate to hold on to him, he was a big part of what they did last season, really direct, aggressive, scoring goals. He’s been a real thorn in teams’ sides.

“To lose him would be difficult for them.“
