Marc Guehi could turn down a return to Chelsea next summer as “more attractive” offers are expected to arrive, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that there is no shortage of clubs tracking the England international who could help him further his career.
The Blues are believed to have included a clause in their deal with Crystal Palace which has given them matching rights should the Eagles agree to Guehi’s exit.
However, the ultimate decision on his possible destination will rest with the player, whether Chelsea activate the clause or not.
Newcastle United were pushing hard to sign the centre-back during the summer window, but failed to match Palace’s lofty asking price of £75million.
Other clubs, including the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, are expected to join the race next summer when his price is expected to drop with just one year remaining on his deal at Selhurst Park.
Given the Blues’ scattergun approach to the transfer market, and treatment of established players, sources say Guehi could favour a move elsewhere.
Marc Guehi stance on Chelsea reunion revealed in new transfer twist
Guehi left Chelsea to join Crystal Palace in 2021 in a deal worth £18million, and has since established himself as a key player for both Palace and England.
With 115 Palace appearances to his name, he was named the Eagles’ club captain ahead of the 2024-25 season and remains a crucial part of Oliver Glasner’s side.
His starring role at Euro 2024 has also helped the defender cement himself in England’s side, and he has now racked up 18 caps for his country.
That form for both club and country has attracted interest from top clubs across Europe, and there is expected to be a scramble for his signature come next summer.
A left-sided centre-back is always a highly sought-after commodity amongst top clubs, and Liverpool are considering Guehi as an option to replace Virgil van Dijk should he leave the club.
Chelsea are interested in a reunion with their academy graduate, but will face stiff competition and may struggle to convince him to make the move.
Sources say that should the Blues miss out on Champions League football, their chances of landing a deal for Guehi will suffer a serious blow.
In other news, striker’s Chelsea transfer has collapsed, says journalist.
