Chris Sutton believes Sean Dyche will have been “doing his nut” after a Beto incident in Southampton’s win over Everton.
The Toffees’ five-match unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end as they were beaten 1-0 by Russell Martin’s Saints on Saturday (2 November) with Adam Armstrong’s goal the difference between the two sides.
While Beto saw a last-minute leveller ruled out by VAR, BBC Sport pundit Sutton was left baffled by the striker’s miss earlier in the second half, just moments before Armstrong found the net.
Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off (4 November, 18:23) he said: “How did he miss that Beto?
“I watched that back and it was an amazing miss. It’s a cushioned volley across, he’s six yards out and I always look at it as somebody who missed a lot of chances, how did he miss that?
“It wasn’t like the ball across was too high for him, it was just careless of him. You head that down, you score but he just looked to head it down, it crashes off the bar, they go down the other end and Adam Armstrong tucks it in.
“Sean Dyche must have been doing his nut.”
What has happened to Everton ace Beto at Goodison Park?
Beto’s header genuinely seemed easier to score than miss. The 26-year-old couldn’t have been much closer to the goal when he was picked out by James Tarkowski’s header.
Somehow, the striker got underneath it and turned it onto the woodwork. As Sutton suggests, Dyche must have been seething at that moment, particularly as Armstrong punished that mistake just seconds later.
While both Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have gone through good streaks during their time on Merseyside, the Toffees are really lacking the sort of consistent number nine that can score 20 goals a season.
If they want to climb well away from the relegation fight this term, they need to start taking their chances. Poor finishing cost them three points at St Mary’s on Saturday and they cannot afford for that to happen week after week.
Hopefully, Beto’s confidence in front of goal won’t have been knocked. The striker has shown some bright flashes off of the bench in recent weeks and it would be a shame if he let one miss impact his form.
