'No-brainer' - Pundit baffled by recent Rangers transfer decision at Ibrox

Andy Halliday has been left baffled by Rangers’ decision not to sign Scott McKenna this summer, labelling it a “no-brainer”.

The 27-year-old left Nottingham Forest this summer and was linked with a move to Ibrox by Stephen O’Donnell [Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, 10 June], before ultimately making the move to Las Palmas as a free agent.

While Philippe Clement ultimately strengthened his backline with the signings of Robin Propper and Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Clyde 1 pundit Halliday believes they missed a trick by not signing McKenna as well.

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (9 October, 1:43:38) he said: “I don’t know if they were interested, but surely that was a no-brainer signing for Rangers this summer, Scott McKenna.

“For me, you’d have went and signed him in the summer.”

Did Rangers try and sign Scott McKenna after Nottingham Forest exit?

On the face of it, McKenna does seem to be the sort of player that Rangers should have been targeting this summer, particularly given the Light Blues defensive issues under Clement last term.

The Scotsman may have had a difficult time at Forest over the last couple of years, but he could have been an excellent defender in the Premiership as he demonstrated during his time with Aberdeen before moving to the City Ground.

The Light Blues didn’t have loads of money to spend this summer, but that would have surely made McKenna an even better option as the Gers wouldn’t have had to stump up any transfer fee but instead just pay his wages and a signing-on fee.

For whatever reason, Clement and his recruitment team decided not to pursue a deal and it is unclear whether or not they were ever genuinely interested in his services.

Hopefully, Rangers don’t live to regret that decision.
