Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not the striker Everton need moving forward, according to Troy Deeney.
The long-serving frontman, who is out of contract with the Toffees in the summer as his future is increasingly debated, has been blasted by former Premier League striker Deeney for his lack of impact.
Deeney, live on talkSPORT [25 November, 15:24], admitted to Paul Hawksbee and Andy Jacobs that he has “not been sold” on Calvert-Lewin after watching him for a long period, and is unconvinced by second in-command Beto.
“I’ve not been sold on Calvert-Lewin for a long time, personally,” he said.
“I think he has all the attributes to do it, but something between the ears doesn’t marry up to him being a top, top striker.
“I think Beto tries, he’s a nice ‘team’ player I suppose, but he’s never going to get you the goals you need.”
Everton and Dominic Calvert-Lewin should shake hands and move on
Calvert-Lewin has been at Goodison Park since 2016, and has witnessed plenty of chaos at Everton which will have bolstered his internal character as a professional player.
However, his optimum task is to deliver on the pitch by scoring goals – he has now failed to find the net in eight starts since 14 September.
Sean Dyche has seldom other options – Beto of course made the late impact against Fulham and was denied repeating the feat at Southampton a week later by VAR – but long-term, this is not a pool of strikers a Premier League manager can continue to rely on.
The Toffees have encouraging creative players in the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil, and managed to carve out 27 shots at home to 10-man Brentford on Saturday [23 November]. The issue lies for all to see – they drew 0-0.
It isn’t mutually exclusive – Calvert-Lewin can love the club, be truthful in his claims he is honoured to lead the line for Everton, yet fancy a change; Dyche’s men, entering an era of fresh ownership and a new stadium are likely considering the same.
