Philippe Clement is “not going anywhere” despite a disappointing start to the season at Rangers, according to Stevie Clifford.

The Belgian has come under fire over the international break from pundits and supporters alike following the Light Blues’ miserable Old Firm defeat to Celtic, with some even suggesting he could be sacked.

However, the Ibrox board only handed the Gers boss a new contract at the start of the season and Four Lads Had A Dream host Clifford believes Clement will be given time to turn things around in Glasgow.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel (11 September) he said: “As for Clement having to start getting results, nothing’s changed with Philippe Clement.

“He’s just had a contract extension, he’s not going anywhere. It doesn’t matter what happens in the next month, two months or anything.

“He’s not going anywhere, the board have made that quite clear so we just need to hope that he does get it together and more performances like we’ve had inconsistently this season against St Johnstone, Ross County, Motherwell where there were flashes of bits in there.

“When he first came in, he went on an extremely good run and won seven or eight in a row after Christmas. This is the type of form that I’m looking for them to get back to.”

Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement amid Ibrox updates?

Clement has likely been criticised for the Gers’ poor start to the season both domestically and in Europe, but it would be wrong of supporters to lay all the blame at the manager’s door.

Yes, some of his decisions both in-game and after defeats have been questionable, but the Belgian has been dealt an incredibly tough hand in the transfer market especially, where he has had to shift a lot of first-team stars off of the wage bill.

Arguably his biggest addition to the squad was Nedim Bajrami and so far we’re yet to see him in action in a Rangers shirt. The time to judge Clement will be when he has a full-strength squad at his disposal.

Hopefully, the Belgian will find a way to turn things around in Glasgow. Nobody wants to see him sacked, but being second best in Scotland isn’t something that is celebrated in Scotland, especially when your city rivals appear to be so far ahead of you off and on the pitch.
