'Of course' - Michael Owen makes Everton joke after what he saw v Leicester City

Michael Owen and Jermain Defoe had a laugh about Everton failing to win yet another game despite holding the lead as they drew against Leicester City.

The Toffees picked up the lead through Iliman Ndiaye but Stephy Mavididi’s strike in the second half saw the game at the King Power end 1-1 on 21 September.

Sean Dyche’s side held two-goal leads against Bournemouth and Aston Villa, only to end up losing both games.

“They don’t hold on to leads, of course they don’t”, said Owen on Premier League Productions’ Goal Rush, after which he and Defoe started laughing.

Everton need to start closing out games better

Owen’s jest at the Toffees’ expense, despite coming from a place of inter-club rivalry as a former Liverpool player, highlights a genuine and concerning trend for Dyche’s side.

Their inability to secure victories from advantageous positions, as seen in their recent draws and losses after taking the lead, indicates deeper issues within the team.

This pattern of not capitalising on leads, exemplified by drawing against Leicester and losing leads against Bournemouth and Aston Villa, not only costs them points but also sows doubt among fans and players alike.

Such results can be catastrophic in the Premier League’s competitive landscape, where every point is crucial, especially in the battle against relegation.

Owen’s laughter might be at the club’s misfortune, but his underlying point about their failure to hold leads is a stark reminder of the potential consequences if this trend continues.

Hopefully, Dyche puts in extra work on this in training to ensure it does not happen again.

In other Everton, a source close to Dan Friedkin has issued an update on the Toffees takeover after a recent twist.
