Man City are unlikely to consider a move for free agent Paul Pogba in the new year, sources have told Football Insider.
It has been reported by The Independent (14 December) that the English champions have sounded the 31-year-old out about a potential move to the Etihad Stadium.
City will be on the hunt for more defensive midfield reinforcements in January following Rodri’s injury – which is set to keep him out for the rest of the 2024-25 campaign.
Sources say they will enter the market for a new midfielder in the new year and have identified a number of defensive options.
Pep Guardiola already has an abundance of options in Pogba’s position, including the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Ilkay Gundogan.
Additionally, the World Cup winner is only eligible to play in March – meaning it will likely take too long for him to get up to speed.
Pogba not set for Man City switch
Pogba had a four-year ban for increased levels of testosterone reduced to 18 months but the situation saw him released by Juventus last month.
His last game for Juve came in September 2023.
The 31-year-old played for Man United between 2016 and 2022, making 226 appearances and scoring 39 goals.
Man City have lost eight of their last 11 games across all competitions – their worst run since 2003.
Guardiola’s side have slipped to fifth in the Premier League table, eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool.
In other news, City have new concerns about Jack Grealish – top source.
