Everton are facing growing competition in their chase to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The report by Bruna Reis [13 August] details that, while the Toffees have shown the highest volume of interest in Phillips during the current window, Fulham and now also Ipswich Town have the England midfielder on their radar.
Phillips’ career is at a crossroads following a dismal spell on loan at West Ham United, with his Man City days all but over after a snub from England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Everton cannot let Phillips slip away
If Everton are serious about progression this season, they cannot let targets like Phillips slip from their grasp.
Whilst Fulham and Ipswich are tempting offers to a player at present, the chance to play in Dyche’s unit and become a vital cog in a huge club’s midfield should be enough to fend off the competition.
It is this competition that is something Sean Dyche and the club have to be wary of, having not yet adequately replaced Amadou Onana.
As for Phillips himself, the next move has to be the right one following a really difficult couple of years.
Manchester City were understood to prefer a permanent sale this summer despite Phillips still having four years to run on his contract, but have now softened and may let the 28-year-old leave on loan, which would be a better alternative for the Toffees.
The 31-cap England man is in dire need of a new home in football to settle, and Everton – although plagued financially – may benefit long-term from blowing the competition out the water and reinvesting a portion of the Onana cash in a like-for-like replacement.
