Player heads to Merseyside this afternoon for Everton medical - Fabrizio Romano

Orel Mangala is travelling to Merseyside for his Everton medical on Thursday, 29 August afternoon, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist reported via X on Thursday (29 August) that the Toffees have booked travel and medical tests for the midfielder ahead of his last-minute move to Goodison Park.

However, new details have emerged about the 26-year-old’s transfer, with it understood to be a straight loan deal with no option or obligation to make it permanent come the end of the season.

Mangala’s move to the Premier League was initially expected to be an initial loan deal, with the option to make his stay on Merseyside permanent for a fee in the region of £33.7million [TEAMtalk, 28 August].

Will Orel Mangala exit Lyon amid Everton transfer rumours?

It seems as though Everton have stopped and seen sense with this deal as they have avoided the possibility of getting lumbered with a player that they may not want permanently in a year’s time.

While there is every chance the 26-year-old could prove to be an immense success in a Blues shirt, he may not adapt well to the Premier League and if that is the case, the Toffees may not want him permanently.

Sean Dyche’s side desperately needs some midfield reinforcements before the transfer window slams shut and while Mangala may only be a temporary solution, he seems to be a very promising player.

Hopefully, no last-minute issues pop up during his medical to throw the move into doubt at the last minute. It would be a huge blow to the Toffees if a deal like this collapsed so late in the window.

If Mangala proves to be a success in an Everton shirt over the next year, maybe the Blues will be better positioned to explore a permanent deal again at the end of next season.
