Lyon defender Jake O’Brien is set to undergo the first part of his medical ahead of a move to Everton on Monday (29 July), according to Joe Thomas.

The Liverpool Echo journalist reported [29 July] that the defender is due on Merseyside, and will likely become Sean Dyche’s fifth signing of the summer.

It is understood that the former Crystal Palace defender will put pen to paper on a deal until 2029 [Fabrizio Romano], joining for a fee of around £16.9million.

Everton set to complete Jake O’Brien signing at Goodison Park

Following the signings of Jack Harrison, Tim Iroegbunam, Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom, O’Brien could be the most important of them all as Dyche prepares for the new season.

The 23-year-old has massively impressed since leaving Selhurst Park last summer, taking a brave step to join Lyon in Ligue 1 and establish himself as a regular figure in Europe, having made 32 appearances.

With Jarrad Branthwaite’s future up in the air at Goodison Park, reportedly refusing to sign a new deal [Daily Mail], the manager could already have a replacement lined up.

The defensive trio of Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford were vital for the Toffees’ Premier League safety last term, only conceding more goals than Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

If their main centre-back talent is to leave Goodison Park this summer, it is important to have a ready-made replacement ready to go ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

O’Brien may also offer something very important for the Toffees – goals. He scored five goals for Lyon last season, showcasing his attacking threat in the final third of the pitch.

Fans will be hoping that the defender’s medical tests are completed without a hitch, having every right to be excited about his signing this summer.

The Evertonians will certainly have their eyes peeled over the coming hours.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche has been handed a new concern after Iliman Ndiaye’s absence v Salford City.
