Pundit backs Ange to address Tottenham 'Problem Area' with summer transfer for Brazil int'l

Tottenham can address a “problem area” in Ange Postecoglou’s squad with a summer move for Vanderson, according to Alan Hutton.

The Spurs boss has been reliant on his full-backs as a creative force in his first season in North London, with both Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie playing crucial roles as the Lilywhites finished fifth in the Premier League.

While speculation has seen Emerson Royal linked with a move away this summer [Fabrizio Romano, 3 June], alternative reports have suggested that Spurs will look to replace the outgoings Brazilian international and Monaco star Vanderson [Fabrizio Romano, 17 June].

Although Hutton believes greater depth behind Udogie should be a priority for Spurs this summer, he believes that Tottenham should be doing everything they can to strengthen their backline to break into the top four.

“I think they need a left back,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“Look, Udogie has been outstanding. His performances, the long contract that you very rarely see at Tottenham that he signed mean that he is definitely one for the foreseeable.

“The problem was that when he got injured who came in? Was it Ben Davies or did Micky van de Ven go out there like he did for a couple of games? They need other players able to play in those specific positions and I don’t think they had that.

“The same can be said at right back, I think if Porro gets injured does Emerson come in? I don’t think he quite cuts it and even at centre-half, they need options.

“I think full-back is a problem area at this moment in time and they need a number two in there.”

Whenever they’re fit, it is clear that Postecoglou will start both Porro and Udogie on either side of Cristian Romero and Van de Ven.

But with European football to contend with next term, he cannot rely on all of that back four to be fit week in and week out, let alone to be able to play two games every seven days otherwise it will come back to bite them.

Vanderson may only be able to play on the right of the defence, but he has the ability to make a real difference in matches. Replacing Porro with the Brazilian won’t cause Postecoglou to have to sacrifice his style of play.

Whether or not those in charge in North London will be willing to foot the bill required to get such a deal over the line for essentially a reserve defender is up for debate, but with so much football to be played next season, it could be essential.
