Pundit backs Levy to accept £20m bid for exit-linked Tottenham man

Tottenham and Daniel Levy will accept a £20million offer from AC Milan for Emerson Royal during the summer transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.

The Brazilian has been in and out of the side under Ange Postecoglou over the last year, deputising at both left-back and right-back but falling well behind Pedro Porro in the Australian’s overall pecking order this season.

Emerson’s lack of game time has seen him linked with a move away from North London this summer with reports suggesting the Brazilian is keen on a move to Milan this summer with personal terms all but agreed [Fabrizio Romano, 3 June].

Although Hutton believes Emerson deserves credit for his adaptability throughout his time with the Lilywhites, he thinks Spurs will be eager to move him on and sign a replacement early in the summer window.

“Personally, I would take it if I’m being brutally honest,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“I liked the look of him when he first came to the club because he was very dynamic and liked getting forward, but I think the question mark was always going to be can you defend in the Premier League?

“You need to be able to do both and I think he struggled. He’s been in and out which doesn’t help of course.

“But I’d like to think I’ve seen enough of him to say that he’s not going to be that go-to guy that will play every single week, that you can rely on because you know what you’re going to get because he’s bit too up and down.

“If they can get those sorts of numbers from a club like AC Milan, then I think they’ll take it. They’ll need to bring somebody in because you need to replace whoever goes out, but that will be a backup I would have thought to the likes of Porro.

“That being said, Emerson Royal did fill in a number of positions so fair play to him. I just don’t see him holding down that right back spot moving forward or really challenging Porro going into next season.”

As Hutton suggested, Emerson arrived in the Premier League with plenty of excitement surrounding him, but for whatever reason, the Brazilian hasn’t quite been able to live up to the expectations people had of him.

In possession, he has always carried a threat but without the ball, he is caught out far too often and the most obvious example of that in the final weeks of the Premier League season was the defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

When fit, Porro is always going to be Postecoglou’s first choice in that position and for good reason. If Emerson wants to be playing regular first-team football, it will be best for everyone involved if he is to move away.

Hopefully, Spurs and Milan will be able to agree on a fee sooner rather than later.
