Pundit moots Clement's 'Biggest problem' at Rangers ahead of clash v Dundee United

Philippe Clement’s “biggest problem” at Rangers is the fact his squad can’t make a mark on Celtic, according to Andy Walker.

The Light Blues get their Premiership campaign back up and running with a trip to Tannadice to face Dundee United on Sunday (15 September) as the international break comes to an end.

Although the Belgian has come under pressure after his winless run against Celtic was extended at Parkhead, Go Radio pundit Walker believes he still has a decent squad of players at his disposal.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (12 September, 3:05) he said: “I always go back to the experience I had and Tommy Burns was given three years and he didn’t win anything.

“But I think looking back, Celtic supporters could see that Tommy knew what he was doing, it was a good style of football that progressively got better.

“He was able to put together a team that was able to beat Rangers, despite them being the champions year after year and I think that’s the big difference with Philippe Clement.

“He’s got a decent squad of players, but he cannot put a team together that makes a mark on Celtic and that’s his biggest problem.”

Ultimately, as the manager of one of the Old Firm sides you are judged on two things. Your record against your Glasgow rivals and whether or not you manage to get your hands on the Premiership title.

Unfortunately for Clement, so far he has failed to beat the Hoops in both the league and the cup and last season the Light Blues threw away what appeared to be a golden chance to get their hands on the title.

If the Belgian wants to remain in charge at Ibrox for the foreseeable future, he needs to put one of these records right sooner rather than later. He cannot afford to go another season without a win over Celtic or a league title.

Results against the likes of Ross County and Motherwell will always be important, by they will matter very little if you’re being beaten by Brendan Rodgers’ side at both Parkhead and Ibrox repeatedly.

Hopefully, Clement will manage to discover that winning formula before it’s too late.
