Pundit shares rumours he's heard about Tottenham bid as Son contract prediction made

Alan Hutton expects Tottenham to trigger a one-year extension clause in Son Heung-min’s contract after sharing a rumour he has heard about Ivan Toney.

Son played predominantly as a striker for Spurs last season, sharing the burden with Richarlison after the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.

Son, 31, is entering the final 12 months of his contract – albeit Spurs do have a one-year option to extend – and recently said he was “uncomfortable” with reports he could be sold, with a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce having been mooted (Daily Mirror, 12 June).

Former Spurs defender Hutton said he heard rumours of a bid for Brentford ace Toney, a more traditional centre forward, being rejected, with Football Transfers (18 June) saying a £40million offer was turned down by the Bees.

Assessing the situation in an interview with Tottenham News, Hutton said: “I think clubs put those (options) in contracts to sort of safeguard themselves if I’m really honest.

“You would just take that option up that gives you the two seasons and allows if someone is to come in and try buy him then you can get a fee that both parties think he’s valued at.

“I think he’s still got a lot to give whether that be a striker position or from the left.

“We don’t know what Tottenham will do moving forward with the striker position, I heard rumours about Toney and different things and bids being rejected.

“I don’t know how true that is but I think you need options and he’s our captain now, he’s our leader so to let him kind of run down a contract doesn’t suit anybody and I don’t think Tottenham will allow that to happen.”

Tottenham won’t sell Son Heung-min

There has been absolutely no murmurings from Son at all about wanting to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and quite frankly why would he want to?

He was made skipper in place of Hugo Lloris last summer and was a vital cog in the first campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

That position in the Spurs hierarchy will not change, even if the club do opt to bring in a more like-for-like Kane replacement this summer in the form of someone like Toney.

A lot of things are likely to happen in the transfer market over the next few months but Son being among the exits just feels a complete non-starter.
