Pundit tells Clement to sell Rangers duo to fund improved new contract for 'Vital' Ibrox star

Peter Grant has told Rangers manager Philippe Clement to sell James Tavernier and Connor Goldson to help fund a new contract for Jack Butland at Ibrox.

Both defenders have been linked with the exit door ahead of the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting that they are targets for Steven Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League [Daily Record, 24 April].

Although no official offers have yet been made for either player’s signature, Go Radio pundit Grant has urged the Gers boss to use any money raised through their sales to hand Butland an improved deal in Glasgow.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (11 June, 12:55) he said: “I asked you the question what would Rangers fans think? Would you rather keep Butland or get money for the two boys and keep Butland?

“Me personally, I would because I think a goalkeeper is vital for you and if I could give Jack Butland a few extra shillings to extend his contract I would definitely do that because I definitely think the manager looks at them and thinks I need something different.

“I need defenders that are going to defend well and try to keep that level. For all the things he’s done going forward James Tavernier, you’ve still got to say there’s question marks about his defending.

“I also think the same with Goldson so I think it’s definitely something Philippe Clement’s looked at and thought I need to improve that.”

Clement has made no secret about his desire to make changes to his Gers squad this summer and while several players have already left Ibrox, it wouldn’t be a shock to see a few more follow suit in the coming weeks.

Both Tavernier and Goldson have experienced a major dip in form this season and while they were once idolised by fans and pundits alike, most are now pining for them to be sold to help fund Clement’s big summer rebuild.

Whether or not an official offer will be made for either player this summer remains to be seen, but if it is, there is a feeling around Ibrox that nobody will stand in their way, as long as the Light Blues’ asking price is met.

It seems unlikely any money raised will be used to fund a new contract for Butland in Glasgow, but those behind the scenes will likely be doing all that they can to ensure the Englishman doesn’t depart for the Premier League.
