Tottenham have been handed a blow in their pursuit of signing Brentford star Ivan Toney, Paul Robinson has said.

The Bees confirmed [Official website, 31 July] that new signing Igor Thiago has successfully undergone surgery on a meniscus injury, and is now expected to be sidelined until the end of the year.

With the player likely brought into the Gtech Community Stadium to replace Toney, Robinson believes Spurs’ chances of signing the 28-year-old have become much slimmer now.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “I think the deal has become a lot more difficult because Thiago, who Brentford brought in, has been ruled out until Christmas. They’re not going to want to let him go as easily as the deal may have been.

“The player has made his feelings very clear that he’d like to play his football elsewhere, and while he is someone I’d love to see at Tottenham, the deal has become difficult.

“It could be a case of Brentford digging their heels in until January. The landscape has changed.”

Tottenham to wait until January to sign Ivan Toney?

It looks as though Ange Postecoglou’s side may have already moved on from the England international following Thiago’s injury, with Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke now being targeted.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Lilywhites are pushing to get a deal done for the 26-year-old, with the Cherries forward likely open to a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [Bryan King].

If a move for Solanke does not go through this summer, however, revisiting the signing of Toney would be a sensible move in January, especially with the player being prepared to run down his contract [talkSPORT].

International teammate Declan Rice has compared the forward to Harry Kane [talkSPORT], and now Toney has a chance to fill the void left by the Bayern Munich man.

The Bees will still be desperate to offload the player, rather than lose him as a free agent next summer, and this could see him become a much cheaper option in January.

In other Tottenham news, Bryan Gil has no future at Spurs despite recent contract developments.
