Pundit View: Levy ready to accept multimillion-pound loss as Tottenham int'l eyes exit

Daniel Levy will be ready to cut his losses and take a multimillion-pound loss to get Giovani Lo Celso out of Tottenham before the transfer deadline, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs originally spent a reported £55.3million to bring the Copa America winner to North London from Real Betis, but he has failed to hit the heights expected of him in a Tottenham shirt [The Guardian, 28 January 2020].

The 28-year-old was left out of Ange Postecoglou’s side for the friendly clash with Bayern Munich and will be allowed to leave before the window slams shut amid interest from Aston Villa and Real Betis [Fabrizio Romano, 10 August].

Although Levy isn’t known for accepting cut-price offers for exit-linked players, Hutton believes the Lilywhites chief will recognise that the time is right to “move him on” regardless of the transfer fee.

“I think he will have to,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He’s been there for a number of years now and it’s not worked out for him. He’s had some loan spells away.

“Don’t get me wrong he’s come in for certain games, I think Ange brought him back in and played him in a few games and he looked decent in certain matches.

“But I don’t see him being there for the foreseeable. I think you’re getting to that stage where you’re not going to recoup your money, you’re probably going to have to cut your losses and try and move him on.

“I think that’s what they will be trying to do because if they get a half-decent fee they can maybe reinvest that back into the midfield.

“They’re definitely not getting that money back.”

Will Giovani Lo Celso exit Tottenham amid Aston Villa transfer rumours?

As Hutton suggests, Lo Celso has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his Spurs career, but it was clear last season that he isn’t a part of Postecoglou’s long-term plans in North London.

The Argentina international will want to be playing regular first-team football at this stage of his career and while that isn’t on offer at Spurs, it could well be if he moves to Villa Park or reunites with Real Betis.

Levy was never going to get anywhere near the £55million he originally paid for the 28-year-old. While he’ll be disappointed to not at least break even, he will know that a summer exit is the best move for everyone involved.
