Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will be looking to recoup the fee Spurs originally spent on Djed Spence to sell him to Genoa this summer, according to Alan Hutton.

The 23-year-old joined the Lilywhites from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022 in a reported £20million deal [Sky Sports, 19 July 2022] but has struggled to make an impact in North London only playing six times for Spurs in the last two seasons.

After a difficult spell on loan with Leeds at the start of the campaign, Spence joined Serie A side Genoa on a six-month deal and reports now suggest the Italian side are keen to make the Englishman’s stay permanent this summer [Fabrizio Romano, 3 July].

Although Levy will be holding out for a reasonable fee, Hutton believes he will be willing to structure the deal to suit Genoa and help Spence finally “settle down” at a new club to get his career back on the right track.

“I think first foremost they’ll try and recoup it all,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“The outlay of £20million plus his wages for the time that he was there, they will look to get that back.

“If not and there are certain teams out there looking for his services that can’t quite afford it, there could be the likes of sell-on clauses and different add-ons to bump the money up.

“So if he goes on and fulfils the potential that Tottenham originally did see in him, they will make their money back, there are ways around it.

“But I think for Djed Spence, I really like him as a player but it’s not quite worked out so I’d like to see him go somewhere, settle down, be happy and get back to the player who is playing the way that we all know that he can be.”

Will Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou sell Djed Spence during the summer transfer window?

Ange Postecoglou asks his fullbacks to play in a very specific way at Spurs which means they are the centre-piece of the team, particularly in possession and it doesn’t seem like Spence has the ability or drive to fit that style.

The 23-year-old was quickly sent on loan to Leeds once the Australian arrived in North London and when that spell was cut short prematurely, Tottenham wasted no time shipping him out to Italy to play for Genoa.

It couldn’t be much clearer that those in charge of the Lilwhites don’t believe Spence has what it takes to play for Spurs. Therefore, Levy and his team should be doing all that they can to get him off of the wage bill this summer.

Hopefully, Genoa will pay the fee Spurs are looking for, then Levy and Postecoglou can begin focusing on incomings as well as outgoings.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has been tipped to send young Spurs prodigy Mikey Moore on loan to a Championship side this summer
