Pundit View: Rangers face new Lammers 'Problem' as Clement makes transfer decision

Rangers will have a “problem” recouping anything close to what they spent on Sam Lammers in the summer transfer window, according to Mark Wilson.

The Dutch forward is training with the Light Blues’ B Team in pre-season as the Gers look to move him on permanently this summer following a loan spell with FC Utrecht last term [Chris Jack, 9 July].

Although Clyde 1 pundit Wilson doesn’t believe the 27-year-old has a future under Philippe Clement, he doesn’t believe any club will be willing to pay “anywhere close” to the £3million the Gers originally spent [Sky Sports, 16 June 2023].

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (16 July) he said: “He really was up there with as poor as I’ve seen in a Rangers jersey. It looked like he didn’t fit the club and he couldn’t deal with that pressure playing there.

“That can happen to players then all of a sudden you go elsewhere the pressure is lifted and you find a club that suits you. I don’t think he would fit Clement’s plans and you can see that by him playing in the B Team.

“Are they going to get anywhere close to that back? I don’t think so and again that’s the problem, you’re buying for big and you’re selling for less.”

Will Sam Lammers exit Rangers amid summer transfer speculation?

While it isn’t Clement’s fault, the Belgian has been lumbered with several of Michael Beale’s mistakes in Glasgow ever since he succeeded the Englishman and Lammers is perhaps the most costly of them all.

The Dutchman never looked at home at Ibrox and his performances were dreadful up until his loan exit in January. For the fee that Rangers paid for his services, they expected a prolific forward rather than an ineffective attacking midfielder.

His loan spell in the Netherlands would have helped his value, but the Gers’ public desire to sell Lammers partnered with his previous struggles in Scotland means that their asking price is now more than a little steep.

The 27-year-old is ultimately only worth whatever anyone is actually willing to pay for him. At this moment in time, that appears to be nothing.

Hopefully, that will change as the summer continues otherwise Clement may well be stuck with a very expensive mistake.
