Rangers AGM erupts into 'Huge applause' after what John Gilligan said - report

John Gilligan was met with “huge applause” after saying erecting a statue of Walter Smith was the least Rangers could do at Thursday’s AGM, Andrew Newport has said.

A monument of the legendary Gers boss was unveiled between Edmiston House and the Copland Road Stand before the Scottish Cup final back in May.

Interim chairman Gilligan was addressing around 1,500 sharesholders at the Clyde Auditorium (5 December) and discussed the decision.

Newport, writing for the Daily Record’s live blog of the AGM, wrote: “Gilligan raises the subject of Walter smith statue.

“‘The very least we could do to mark his contribution’. Huge applause.”

On a day that was expected to be tempestuous, explosive and full of fury, it is nice to see there was a feelgood moment in relation to an absolute Ibrox icon.

Mismangement off the pitch in recent times, coupled with up-and-down performances on it (largely down before a return upturn) has led to a general apathy from the fanbase towards the club right now.

But one thing that does unite everyone at Rangers is the fact that Smith – an absolute giant of Scottish football – is a much-revered figure by everyone at the club.

In total, he won the title 10 times as Rangers manager over two different spells, while collecting five Scottish Cup medals and winning the Scottish League cup on six occasions.

The word legend is bandied around so much nowadays but when it comes to Smith, who sadly passed away in 2021, it barely does justice to what a great figure he was at the club.
