John Gilligan has begun the Rangers official club AGM by thanking the SFA and apologising to the supporters at Ibrox.
The official address of some 1,500 Gers shareholders begun around midday on Thursday [5 December], with a tense atmosphere anticipated by the hierarchy.
Colin McMillan of the Heart & Hand Podcast posted on X [5 December] that Gilligan begun proceedings by thanking the SFA and UEFA, and issuing a full apology to anyone affected by the Copland Road refurbishment delays, which forced the club to begin the season at Hampden Park.
McMillan shared: “The Chairman continued. The executive team are doing a fantastic job under difficult circumstances since the departure of James Bisgrove. Delighted to announce Patrick Stewart joining the club and went over some of his accolades and experience.
“The Copland road development has been one of our biggest challenges. A full apology is given to supporters and anyone in the Copland disturbed by the work.
“The SFA and UEFA were thanked also. Delighted to unveil the statue of Walter Smith.”
Rangers AGM expected to be eventful
It has been expected that Gilligan would be reappointed to the board during the AGM following his spell as interim chairman at Ibrox [Chris Jack, 4 December].
A hugely interesting point is how quickly he has come clean about the disastrous Copland Road episode, albeit briefly – understandable with how much there will be to proceed through.
As quoted by the Daily Record [5 December], Gilligan stated: “We started out with the best of intentions. But we have to offer a full apology to fans disrupted.”
The likes of Philippe Clement, Nils Koppen and James Taylor are also at the top table for the all-important gathering, which will bring the election involving Gilligan, George Taylor and Julian Wolhardt.
Gilligan is widely expected to be re-elected according to The Rangers Review’s Jack, with few anticipated to oppose him.
It remains to be seen how the results of the AGM will shape the rest of the campaign moving forward – undoubtedly softened in the short-term by Wednesday night’s 6-0 rout of Kilmarnock. If it had been a poor result, Thursday afternoon would have looked incredibly more dreary.
In other Rangers news, Clement insists he will not be letting his players relax after their midweek thrashing.
