Rangers have been backed to complete the signing of Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United ahead of the January transfer window.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains very well-connected at the club, explained that the move would be “a real opportunity” for both parties.
The 22-year-old has found regular game time hard to come by this season and has featured just three times across all competitions, playing just nine minutes of league football.
He has fallen behind Mateo Joseph, Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford in the pecking order and has struggled to make an impact in his limited minutes under Daniel Farke.
As a result, Rangers have expressed an interest in rescuing him from his Elland Road nightmare and handing him the opportunity to play regular football in Glasgow.
Robinson explained that Cyriel Dessers and Danilo have not found the net often enough so far this season, leading the club to explore the transfer market for new strikers.
Joe Gelhardt backed to make Rangers switch from Leeds United
Gelhardt is said to be keen on the move north of the border, with the opportunity to play more regular football key to his decision.
Robinson, who played over 100 times for Leeds during his time at the club, has insisted the move could be either on loan or permanent, with the clubs to decide what would suit them best.
“Joe Gelhardt, that’s a real opportunity,” he told Football Insider.
“From the player’s perspective, he’s not really been in the squad and hasn’t got many first-team minutes.
“For Rangers in their financial situation, he’s not going to cost them a fortune.
“In Dessers and Danilo, they’ve not really got the goals they’ve needed this year, so to give a younger striker the chance…
“Basically what I’m saying in, Joe Gelhardt to Rangers is a doable deal in January, whether that be a permanent deal or on loan.”
In other news, Rangers are “looking at very clever loan signings” in January.
