Rangers fans fired warning after key Ibrox development - Keith Wyness

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Rangers fans the appointment of Patrick Stewart is “pointless” without major changes to the ownership structure.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted there are still “big questions to be answered” despite the “excitement” about Stewart.

Rangers announced on 25 November that Stewart will begin his new chief executive role on 16 December – the day after the club play Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final.

He left Man United at the end of last season after 18 years at Old Trafford, where he took on the interim CEO role following Richard Arnold’s departure.

The Gers are also looking for a new permanent chairman but widespread reports have suggested it will not be Malcolm Offord after a recent twist in the search.

Rangers fans shouldn’t get too excited as Wyness fires new warning

Wyness insisted a strong management team will be needed to attract investment.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Rangers fans might be excited but they haven’t fixed the top level just yet.

“They’ve fixed levels two and three, because Patrick Stewart is a good operator and he’s well-respected.

“That position is fine, but it’ll be pointless unless they fix the very top of the club.

“That comes with funding, the ownership structure and the board itself.

“There are still some big questions to be answered, but things are looking brighter.

“It’s good for a new investor to see a strong management team in place.”
