Rangers fell to a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United in their third pre-season friendly of the summer.

The team held their own for the most part and both teams went close before ex-Gers loanee Amad Diallo collected the ball on the right and cut in on his left foot to curl a shot past Jack Butland, making it 1-0 to United to give them a half-time lead.

The second half saw a United team with 10 changes come out and compete, rather concerningly, with Rangers and a brilliant goal from Joe Hugill made it 2-0 with 21 minutes remaining.

Here’s how Ibrox News rated the performance of each Gers star during the game.

Jack Butland – 6/10

Didn’t have many saves to make and did well when it came to commanding his area, so hard to judge his performance, but he did nothing wrong.

Dujon Sterling – 8/10

A key man for Clement last season was auditioning for the right-back role amid speculation James Tavernier could move on [Fabrizio Romano], and he made a huge goal-line clearance in the first-half to keep the game goalless. A strong performance that kept Jadon Sancho quiet.

Ben Davies – 4/10

Tried to use his physicality against the lightweight teenager Wheatley up front and Amad but just struggled to assert himself for the most part. Let Hugill run off him for the second goal far too easily too.

John Souttar – 7/10

Finished the season as the first-choice centre-back and showed why with his performance in this game. Nothing came down his side for the most part and he made a few interventions in the process when needed too.

Jefte – 3/10

A horror debut for the new signing as he was given a real headache by Amad. He didn’t know whether to get tight or let him turn, and no matter what he did it was the wrong decision. Beaten far too easily for the goal too. Not what fans will have wanted to see.

Connor Barron – 5/10

The young midfielder was brave in the first half and always showing for the ball, but his quality wasn’t the best and he lost possession regularly by trying to force passes when he didn’t need to. Encouraging, but still plenty of room for improvement.

Mohammed Diomande – 7/10

The driving force in midfield, he often had the better of Casemiro and Toby Collyer but was lacking the final product in the attacking third. A great platform to build on for the season though.

Scott Wright – 6/10

The winger was lively and showed glimpses of quality in the final third but things didn’t really fall for him. Showed great work-rate though and it’s no shock Clement has taken a liking to him.

Tom Lawrence – 5/10

Lawrence has been handed the keys to this team in the number ten role but he’s struggling to justify it currently. Limited influence on the game, even in the second half against a team of academy players. Needs to do more.

Oscar Cortes – 4/10

A first start after a long spell out injured but Cortes may as well have been in the gym instead, as he barely saw the ball and did little else but run for 45 minutes before being substituted.

Cyriel Dessers – 5/10

New season but similar problems for Dessers as he had a few chances to find the net but his finishing and composure really let him down. It’s not a surprise that the club are open to his exit [Chris Jack] if they get the right offer.
