Rangers have expressed a desire to take Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt on a loan deal, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

According to the news outlet’s website [26 November], the Gers were one of ten sides pursuing a move for the wantaway Leeds forward in the summer and Philippe Clement is ready to re-enter the frame for his signature.

The 22-year-old was pursued by Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic last January, but the move ultimately collapsed, with Leeds unable to sanction a loan move north of the border due to loan restrictions.

Gelhardt’s time at Elland Road has not gone according to plan since his exit was ultimately scrapped during the summer transfer window.

The Englishman was touted to become a “goal machine” at Ibrox as the Light Blues aimed to bolster the forward ranks last season, and seemingly the sentiment remains the same.

Cyriel Dessers has been long thought of as a short-term option for the Gers, and while a replacement has been thought of as too grand an ask due to the financial restrictions in Glasgow, a loan move for Gelhardt represents the perfect solution.

However, with interest from Championship sides Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle, and Preston North End alongside Belgian Pro League sides, this deal will take a lot of work for the Gers to get over the line.

Considering Rangers are well and truly out of the running for the Scottish Premiership this season, paired with the uncertainty surrounding Clement,
Ibrox may not be the once desirable landing spot of the past.

Therefore, Nils Koppen must pull out all the stops to fend off the mounting interest and convince Gelhardt that his future lies in Ibrox.
