Rangers may pay 'Significantly More' as they hold weaker hand to sign exit-bound player - report

Aberdeen are in a stronger position to capitalise on Connor Barron’s exit amid links to Rangers, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported via its online edition on 12 June they may be asked to pay significantly more than £500,000 in training compensation which a club outside Scotland would have to pay.

The 21-year-old Scottish midfielder has been on the transfer radar at Ibrox for a while but any deal to sign him is not going to be straightforward as they hold a weaker hand despite him leaving the Dons after his contract expired.

The Record report reads: “If he was to move outside of Scotland then Aberdeen would be entitled to just over £500,000 in training compensation.

“That figure does not hold in Scotland and unless the two clubs could agree compensation then any fee would be decided by an independent tribunal. That is unlikely to value Barron, who came right through the Dons Academy, at less than the training compensation.

“The chances are that Rangers could be asked to pay significantly more as Dundee United previously found out to their cost when they signed Charlie Telfer from the Light Blues a few years back.

“It puts Aberdeen in a strong position and they can hold out for an enhanced fee and other potential add-ons and sell-on that wouldn’t be on offer if Barron was to leave Scotland.”

Rangers must weigh out Connor Barron’s pros and cons before making moves

Aberdeen’s strong position in Barron’s transfer puts Gers in a challenging situation.

The Dons hold the upper hand to negotiate for an enhanced fee, along with potential add-ons and a sell-on clause which is not something that would please the decision makers at Ibrox.

For Gers, the pros of signing Barron include his proven talent and potential to strengthen their midfield.

As a young Scottish player, he also contributes to the homegrown quota for European competitions.

However, the cons are the financial implications of a potentially higher fee and the risk of losing out to other interested clubs.

The Glasgow side must weigh these factors carefully, considering their budget and the competition for Barron’s signature.

Ultimately, they need to decide if the potential benefits of signing Barron justify the financial and competitive risks involved or if there are better options out there.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement will now tell a first-team player to clear out his locker at Ibrox as a development has emerged from Glasgow.
