Rangers were lucky to get away with their 1-0 Scottish Premier League win over Hibernian on Sunday (September 29) after Mykola Kukharevych’s ’embarrassing’ penalty miss.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic frontman Frank McAvennie believes that, despite their luck, Rangers are learning how to ‘win ugly’ after an underwhelming start to the season for Philippe Clement’s side.

VAR overturned the on-field decision after centre-back John Souttar, 28, handled the ball in the six-yard box, giving Kukharevych, 23, the opportunity to cancel out Tom Lawrence’s stunning opener.

The Ukrainian striker stuttered in his run-up but his tame effort was no trouble for Rangers ‘keeper Jack Butland who easily leapt to his right and saved the day.

Rangers win despite poor performance

The Glasgow club have won all four games across all competitions without conceding a goal since their 3-0 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Lawrence has scored the winner in both of Rangers’ two consecutive 1-0 Scottish Premier League wins against Dundee United and Hibernian, keeping them in the race for the title.

“What they’re doing is they’re finding ways to win ugly”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“You’ve got to say fair play to them because they’ve not been playing well, he (Kukharevych) missed the penalty, the worst penalty I’ve ever seen the boy take.

“All that slowing down, stepping up, just go and hit the ball.

“Everyone’s got to show off now before they take a penalty, it’s like doing a wee dance and it was pretty embarrassing, it was the worst penalty.

“So it could have been 1-1 at the weekend and it wouldn’t have been good going into this game (Vs Lyon) but they got a win and Rangers will take a win all day long.

“It’s a good sign for them, that they’re not playing well but they’re getting the result.

“I thought Hibs deserved a point but Rangers won, they dug it out.

“It wasn’t good to watch but they got the result.”
