Rangers poised to see off Serie A competition in 'Significant' transfer boost - report

Rangers are reportedly close to signing Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron as a free agent despite interest from Serie A, according to Rangers Review.

In an article published by Chris Jack [12 June], it was stated that the Light Blues are set to complete a deal for the 21-year-old, who was shortlisted for the SFWA Young Player of the Year award in 2023-24.

The potential deal is branded as a “significant boost” for Philippe Clement as he, Nils Koppen and his staff reassemble the squad at Ibrox, particularly as a compensation fee due to Aberdeen would be the only charge for the midfielder, whose contract at Pittodrie has come to end.

Connor Barron in high demand as Rangers step up transfer pursuit

With Barron in high demand – his Bosman status a factor as well as his 29-appearance season with the Dons – the club must act quickly to get the deal sealed.

Cagliari from Italy’s Serie A are also in the hunt, it is claimed, with a tribunal set for any potential transfer completion for the midfielder.

That figure would be minimal – certainly a lot lower than the amount it would cost to sign a player of similar quality from south of the border, for example.

The Gers are looking to replace the outgoing Ryan Jack and John Lundstram, who have both left on frees, and Barron would represent an astute piece of business.

Derek Ferguson says the club must get the capture of Barron secured rapidly due to potential “obstacles”, but Rangers remain in pole position.

It would certainly be another brick in the wall for next campaign.
