Rangers star set for int'l snub within hours - report

Rangers centre-back John Souttar is set to be dropped for Scotland’s final 26-man squad for EURO 2024, according to the Scottish Sun.

Steve Clarke is set to name his squad before the final pre-tournament friendly against Finland on Friday 7 June, and Souttar, along with veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon, will be the two players who miss out.

Souttar suffered an injury-afflicted final few weeks of the domestic season and didn’t feature against Gibraltar on Monday (June 3), raising doubts over whether he would make the squad.

John Souttar set for Scotland snub in Rangers update

Souttar always appeared to be an outside chance of making the final 26 for the tournament in Germany this summer, even with Scotland often opting to play three centre-backs in a game.

Grant Hanley, Jack Hendry, Ryan Porteous, Liam Cooper and Scott McKenna are all ahead of Souttar in the pecking order, with Kieran Tierney and Scott McTominay often deputising in that position.

John Souttar started 36 matches in all competitions for Rangers last season.

That left Souttar as arguably the seventh-choice pick in central defence, and regardless of how far the Tartan Army progressed into the competition, it’s unlikely that he would have been given any minutes.

Therefore, cutting Souttar and Gordon, with plentiful cover in both positions, makes sense, particularly after injuries to Lyndon Dykes and Ben Doak necessitated attacking reinforcements.

Philippe Clement will in some ways be pleased at the news; the disappointment will be tough to take for Souttar, but his exclusion means that he’ll be back at Ibrox at the same time as most of the squad, ready to stake his claim as a starter in the Belgian’s rebuild next season [The Scotsman].

In other Rangers news, a Premier League midfielder with “great quality” is now up for grabs this summer amid a recent development with a move to Ibrox on the cards.
