Rangers takeover key to agreeing stunning Ibrox deal - sources

Rangers are not expected to make any movement on the managerial front until a new chairman comes in, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed “It’s hard to make those big decisions” when nobody is at the top running the club.

It was announced on Monday (16 September) that John Bennett was stepping down as Chairman with immediate effect due to health reasons, leaving the club without a Chairman.

Former Chairman Dave King has been linked with a return to Ibrox, which could raise questions over Clemet’s future if the 69-year-old doesn’t view him as the man to run the team.

King left his role as Chairman in 2020, but he was in charge when the club stopped Celtic from winning 10 titles in a row under Steven Gerrard.

Rangers currently trail Celtic by five points in the Scottish Premiership, while they also failed to qualify for the Champions League in what has been a tumultuous start to the season.

Rangers bringing back Dave King could lead to rumours about Philippe Clement’s future

King had a successful working relationship with Steven Gerrard during his time in charge of the Scottish giants, and there will be rumours of him returning if King steps back into his former role.

Gerrard led the Gers to an undefeated 2020-21 campaign which saw the club win the Scottish Premiership, but a return could be difficult.

Sources tell Football Insider that it would be a “hard deal” to bring Gerrard back to Ibrox as he’s on a very lucrative deal in charge of Al-Ettifaq.

Pressure is mounting on Clement though and Football Insider revealed that the 50-year-old knows he’s “not sitting pretty.”

The Light Blues will be back in action on Saturday (21 September) in the League Cup against Dundee.
