Rangers have been tipped to beat Crystal Palace to the signing of Peterborough star Kwame Poku in the January transfer window.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson insisted that Palace will target more established and ready-made players to come into their team and make a difference.
He went on to explain that Poku, 23, is not one of these players and would take time to adapt, which the Eagles may not be able to afford.
After a difficult start to the season, Palace find themselves in the relegation zone with just one win from their opening 11 games.
As a result, Robinson has insisted they will target players to help them move out of a relegation battle in January, rather than potential additions with the future in mind.
This news comes after Football Insider revealed on 16 November that Rangers are also in the running for the forward and will look to pip English sides to his signature.
The Scottish outfits are looking to add talent in the wide areas and up front, and could open talks in January as Poku will have just six months remaining on his contract.
Crystal Palace to miss out on Kwame Poku after transfer twist
Palace’s interest comes alongside clubs from the Championship as well as the Glasgow giants who want to make the most of the opportunity of a free transfer for a promising star.
Football Insider revealed on 16 November that Palace want to sign the best young talents from the Championship and the EFL as they plan for the future.
However, Robinson has now insisted that Poku is not yet ready for the step up to the Premier League, while Palace will have to look at other options, potentially paving the way for Rangers to make a move.
“They’re linked with good young players, but they’re not January signings,” he told Football Insider.
“If Palace are in trouble and they’re in the bottom three, they’re not going to spend X amount of money on Poku to score 10-15 goals between now and the end of the season.
“He’s a player that may take time to adapt, not one that’s going to have immediate impact.
“The players we’re talking about are 20-23 years old, they’re not who you want to be thrown into what may be a relegation battle.
“It’s a big ask for players of that age and with that experience.“
In other news, Sunderland may be powerless to resist big-money offers for Chris Rigg.
