Rangers are set to confirm the “shock exit” of Creag Robertson on Wednesday morning (9 October) as he becomes the latest high-profile resignation at Ibrox, the Scottish Sun reports.

According to the paper’s website on 8 October the club will make the Director of Football Operations’ departure official early the morning after his decision to leave emerged.

Robertson only moved into the role in June 2023 and it appears he does not have a specified job to leave for as he is reportedly “now pursuing other opportunities”.

He is said to have had a “challenging” year at Ibrox after “overseeing a major downsizing across all departments”

Rangers lose another after John Bennett and James Bisgrove

There may not be a huge disappointment among the fanbase at Robertson’s exit in itself [Heart & Hand, 8 October] but it adds to an unedifying pattern at Ibrox.

The club has become a byword for disfunction in recent seasons as numerous key positions have seen people come and go.

Whether it be an unfortunate and unavoidable exit, such as John Bennett who had to resign last month as chairman on health grounds, or seemingly jumping ship for a better opportunity, such as CEO James Bisgrove’s sudden exit to the Saudi Pro League in April, it is the club that is left to pick up the pieces.

The cycle of hiring and firing managers has had the most obvious effect on the fortunes of the team, with the decision made to back Philippe Clement ahead of the season even if results were poor as the damage done by three new managers in as many seasons – Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale, and Clement – was realised [The Herald, 27 July].

But with chairmen also coming and going – John Gilligan is in place temporarily to replace Bennett, who himself only took over from Douglas Park in April last year – it fosters a culture of uncertainty throughout the club which surely doesn’t benefit the team.

The “major downsizing” at Ibrox has seemingly not spared key positions, with the Light Blues currently lacking a chief executive, a director of football, or a head of academy, and has also now stretched to seeing off Robertson himself.

In other Rangers news, Ianis Hagi is expected to leave the Light Blues despite his return to the first team.
