Andy Halliday says he busted out the knee-slide celebration reminiscent of former Rangers teammate Alfredo Morelos at the weekend “only because it was Hibs”.

Halliday fired home a winner for Motherwell at Easter Road on 5 October, having taken plenty of hostility from the crowd due to his past with the Gers and Hearts.

Footage of the goal was posted on X by a supporter which went down well with Motherwell and Light Blues fans.

Speaking to Si Ferry on Open Goal [8 October], Halliday said, as quoted by the Daily Record: “That was purely because it was against Hibs. I wouldn’t do it against anybody else.

“Because I did the celebration in the derby and they hated it, and I was getting next level abused. The abuse I was taking at corners – mental. I fully admit – that was pre-planned. If I’m scoring, I’m going for it.

“It’s all in good jest. I know any time I play against Hibs or a couple of other teams I am going to take a bit of stick. If you are a professional football player you need to expect that at times.

“You always look to get these wee nuggets when you can to give a bit back. It’s all in good jest and hopefully it is taken that way. It is good to get the bragging rights for Motherwell at the end of the day.”

Halliday certainly gained points with the Rangers fans watching the match and those who picked up on his celebration.

Not the first time he has pulled it from the locker, the 32-year-old’s admission it was pre-planned before going on to score the winner is poetic in the eyes of not just Motherwell fans, but those of a Gers or Hearts persuasion, too.

If Morelos has seen the goal, it is fair to assume he would have enjoyed the homage paid to himself by a former teammate.

The Colombian’s celebration was a massively familiar sight at Ibrox, with supporters having witnessed him score 124 competitive goals adorning their badge – some even having wanted him back in recent months.

He is now on loan in his homeland at Medellin outfit Atletico Nacional, from Brazilian side Santos.

Halliday’s Motherwell side are breathing down the necks of Rangers, sitting three points behind Philippe Clement’s men; the next meeting of the clubs comes in the Scottish League Cup semi-final.

Let’s hope the celebration is not seen in that upcoming encounter.

In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart urges Clement to make a move with Dujon Sterling.
