Rangers transfer now 'Impossible' as Galatasaray enter race - report

Rangers face an “impossible” task of signing West Ham defender Ben Johnson this summer, according to Fotomac.

The Turkish outlet reported [13 June] that the Gers are interested in signing the 24-year-old, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the month, but will be unable to afford the player’s high salary.

Galatasaray have now entered the race for Johnson, with the player’s versatility impressing head coach Okan Buruk, and are willing to offer him an annual salary of £1.7million plus a signing-on fee.

With the 24-year-old likely coming to the end of his stay at the London Stadium, multiple clubs have taken note of the situation and are biding their time.

Philippe Clement’s Rangers were one of the teams assessing their options, but it appears that money will be a huge factor in the club missing out on Johnson this summer.

Due to the player’s versatility, he could be compared to Dujon Sterling, who is a much-loved figure at Ibrox following a breakout season under Clement.

Johnson played in several positions under David Moyes throughout the 2023/24 campaign, ranging from right-back to left-wing when called upon. His potential would make him an extremely exciting signing in this window.

Despite this, Johnson probably would have been utilised in his natural full-back position, with the long-serving James Tavernier continuing to be linked with a move away from Ibrox this summer.

Of course, the sale of the 125-goal star would help the Gers to afford Johnson’s wage, though this would be an extremely risky plan, especially if there was no deal in place with the current West Ham man.

For now, it seems that Rangers are set to miss out on another transfer target, having already pulled out on the signing of Sofia Levski’s Jose Cordoba.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement will now tell a first-team player to clear out his locker at Ibrox as a development has emerged from Glasgow.
