Rangers transfer plans emerge as Clement & Koppen see value in new sources - report

Rangers are expected to move away from signing players from the English market this summer, according to the Daily Record.

The paper reported on their website (14 June) that despite previous managers Steven Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale looking to the south for new recruits in recent years it is “likely” the net will be cast more widely during the current transfer window.

Philippe Clement and fellow Belgian director of recruitment Nils Koppen are leading another overhaul of the squad, and reportedly “there is a feeling at Ibrox now that you’ll get better value shopping elsewhere”.

So far Rangers have done deals for a trio of 20-year-olds, with Brazilian left-back Jefte signing, Colombian winger Oscar Cortes returning on a loan-to-buy agreement, and French centre-back Clinton Nsiala signing a pre-contract to arrive on a free transfer.

The likes of Todd Cantwell, Kieran Dowell, Ben Davies and Tom Lawrence have all come in from England in recent seasons, as has star keeper Jack Butland.

Rangers look elsewhere from English transfer market

If it weren’t for the success of Butland the recent recruitment from south of the border would have to go down as underwhelming, especially since Cantwell regressed in his first full season last term.

There are clearly quality players to be found in England but considering the wages it can take to land them it may not be a cost-effective for Clement and Koppen since they have so much work to do on this squad.

The fact that there has been a clear focus on youth and (relatively) unproven names also suggests there is an eye on maximising potential resale value.

Again, it is Butland who represents the greatest chance for Rangers to make a profit on any one player in the squad currently, but the likes of Cortes and Mohamed Diomande could feasibly end up being sold for good money if they progress well.

Oscar Cortes has re-signed for Rangers after seeing his loan last season ruined by injury.

The Light Blues aren’t in an ideal position by any means as they are on their fourth manager in as many seasons, having failed to win the Scottish Premiership under the most recent three, while repeatedly losing players for nothing.

So if Clement and Koppen are going to manage to put a stop to that damaging cycle they are going to need to get it right this summer.

John Bennett has assured them the money is there again this summer, but if the club ends up in the same position again in 12 months it may not be.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been backed for a “no-brainer” deal to sign Bojan Miovski.
