Ianis Hagi never wanted to leave Rangers this summer and it is entirely the club’s decision to “bomb” him into the B Team, according to Football Scotland.
The outlet reported via their website on 19 August that suggestions the Romanian had changed his mind on leaving were inaccurate but sources have indicated that he did not ask to go in the first place.
And reports of a potential move to Fiorentina have also been dismissed while Hagi does a “professional” job playing for the reserves.
Hagi reportedly had an agreement in place with Fiorentina [SportpeSure, 21 July], with a deal worth more than £2million potentially on the cards [Digi Sport, 26 July], but that is said to be “not the case”.
Philippe Clement has no plans for Ianis Hagi at Rangers
Hagi may not be the saviour that the Light Blues need in the senior side currently but he has been showing reminders with the B Team of what he can do.
Clement has told 25-year-old he doesn’t have plans for him despite the Romania international wanting to stay [Sky Sports, 12 August] so there appears to be no route back in.
It therefore is looking increasingly likely that the club has made the collective decision they will not trigger the clause in his contract which reportedly increases his wages by £6,000-a-week [Daily Record, 13 August].
Hagi has been stuck on 99 Gers appearances since this time last year in what looks like a major hint that the 100th would activate the pay rise.
Why Rangers agreed a new deal with such a clause in it in December 2022 if they were going to freeze him out in less than a year makes little sense and doesn’t send a positive message to other current or prospective players.
Clement says Todd Cantwell has twice asked to leave the club so the fact that he has been left with the reserves makes some sense, with his potential return to first-team action dismissed as something fans wouldn’t accept [Hugh Keevins, 16 August] but Hagi seems to be getting a rough deal.
And if the expected move to Fiorentina is not on the cards then an alternative better be sourced fast otherwise the club will be paying a 39-cap international not to play for them just so they can avoid paying him a bit more to do so.
In other Rangers news, a star attacker the Light Blues hoped to get back has agreed a new loan move.
