Rangers want to sign free-agent, he has just left Manchester United - report

Rangers could step up their interest in signing Brandon Williams before the transfer deadline, according to the Daily Record.

Keith Jackson’s report [15 August] detailed that the Light Blues – who have had Williams listed as a target since the end of last season – may now push to sign the left-back following fears of a long-term injury to Ridvan Yilmaz.

A desperate night at Hampden Park on Tuesday saw Philippe Clement’s side crash out of the Champions League as Yilmaz was stretchered off with a significant thigh injury.

Williams has been a free agent since his release by Manchester United in the summer.

Rangers have admired Williams for a while, and have been conscious of his contract at Manchester United winding down.

The 23-year-old was once considered the golden boy at Old Trafford, making 36 appearances in the Covid-truncated 2019-20 season as a teenager under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After his appearances in a red shirt dwindled, two loan spells followed in East Anglia including playing a part in Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League last season.

With the Gers having seen Borna Barisic depart to Trabzonspor for nothing and key man Yilmaz potentially out longer than first considered, turning to Williams may not be the worst idea in the world.

The player himself needs to enjoy his football again and find a settled home and a disciplined environment, and the Gers must do him justice with that should they sign him, giving him a stable surrounding to flourish and play to his best level.
