Barry Ferguson believes it would be “madness” for Rangers to sack Philippe Clement anytime soon amid a sluggish start to the season.
The former Gers captain, writing in the Daily Record [16 August], says there has been a “cycle of chaos” created by reactive decisions at the club, citing the previous sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as an example.
Ferguson backs the club to show faith in Clement and restore some consistency to a place very much needing a settled approach.
“As worried as the fans might feel right now – and I’m one of them – I firmly believe this is not the time to start talking about getting rid of yet another manager,” Ferguson said.
“There’s been way too much of that over the last few years and this constant chopping and changing flies in the face of everything Rangers Football Club have always been about.
“It’s created a cycle of chaos and knee-jerk reactions, like the decision to sack Gio van Bronckhorst a few months after he had led the club to a European final and picked up a Scottish Cup. So, yes, while I’m as concerned as everyone else about what’s been going on, it would be madness to rip everything up again at a time when Clement has been given a new, long-term contract and trusted to oversee a period of change.”
Rangers need to stick by Philippe Clement
To echo Ferguson, tearing up the foundations in place after handing Clement a long-term deal would be foolish and short-sighted.
The mammoth task which has faced not only the manager but the recruitment staff too has been unenviable at best and next to impossible at worst, and whilst criticism can be made of their approach or their signings, to dispense with staff such as these just isn’t what Rangers need.
Clement’s situation is not the same as that of Michael Beale a little under a year ago, whose position had been made untenable as the club reached October having lost three of their seven league games – two at Ibrox – and the total authority on transfer decisions had gone pear-shaped.
The reality is, within the next few months, there will be a catching-up mission in place – Celtic have the stability that the Light Blues must again gather and a massive part of that is to keep a settled camp in place, rather than the “chopping and changing” Ferguson refers to.
Hampden Park home games are not ideal; some of the calls by John Bennett behind the scenes likewise, and there have been fair criticisms of certain players in the opening games. But a bit of momentum and the Light Blues can certainly change the tide.
