Real Madrid are set to lock down two key elements of their La Liga and Champions League double last season, with just a year left on the contracts of Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy.
The former will receive a one-year extension due to the club policy of only extending contracts by a single season, for players who are over the age of 30. The 32-year-old is content to do so, but Los Blancos believe he still has plenty left in the tank, and there has even been a suggestion of a tacit agreement that his new deal will hold for longer.
That is where the case of Mendy differs, as per Diario AS. The fact that Alphonso Davies is set to arrive next summer, remaining at Bayern Munich this coming season, aids his case for a new contract. At 29 years of age, he can be renewed for longer though, and amid reports that a deal is all but agreed, they say the length of the contract will in part depend on his intentions going forward.
Mendy has in the past turned down an offer from Saudi Arabia, and after doubts about his continuity last summer, now is regarded as a central part of Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The Italian believes the Frenchman to be key. However Mendy will be aware that Davies is a planned addition for next season, and may want to give himself an exit route.
