Asmir Begovic has labelled Neal Maupay as a “really good guy” despite his comments after Everton were defeated against Nottingham Forest.
After the Toffees’ 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park on Sunday (29 December) Maupay took to X to poke fun at the club and relish in their loss.
Despite being on loan at Marseille, the striker is still technically an Everton player until the end of the season when the deal becomes permanent as the result of an obligation to buy.
However, Begovic did not criticise his former teammate’s comments as he said live on Sky Sports News (30 December, 19:11): “I’m not sure I can explain Neal Maupay to you guys, that’s a long story.
“Neal’s a really good guy, he likes a bit of social media action. There’s nothing really to add to that to be honest.
“We just focus on our work. We wish Neal all the best at Marseille and for the season ahead.”
Neal Maupay more popular with Everton players than supporters
Maupay’s comments have caused a big stir online with supporters and pundits saying that the 28-year-old was out of line and shouldn’t have said what he did.
Saying that, as Begovic points out, this isn’t unexpected behaviour from the striker who has gained himself a bit of a name for being a wind-up on social media and this time round it was Everton who were at the brunt of his comments.
The Toffees aren’t in a position where they can punish their player with his loan club paying his wages and therefore, it’s just a matter of time until the parties can cut ties in the summer, which will no doubt be a positive for all involved parties.
While some supporters may be disappointed that Begovic didn’t speak out against Maupay’s actions, attention is probably what the player is seeking and in this case, the club do just have to rise above it and hope they can silence him with some improved results.
